Electric vehicle charging solution by REN wins international award

The mobility solution created by REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais that enables charging electric vehicles directly from Very-High-Voltage Lines, speed-E,won the "Good Practice of the Year" award in the "Technological Innovation & System Integration" category, awarded by the Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI). The award was handed over by the EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, during the third edition of the "PCI Energy Days", hosted by the European Commission.

The jury was made up of nine international experts, and decided in favour of REN's solution because "it makes a significant contribution to both grid reliability and decarbonisation of the transport sector, thus furthering and accelerating electrification".

For João Conceição, Executive Director at REN, "this award is extremely important for REN because it acknowledges the culture of innovation present in the company in the face of the demanding challenges posed by the transformations in the energy sector, namely the transition to sustainable mobility".

This was the ninth edition of the "Good Practice of the Year", and, since 2014, it has been honouring initiatives showing good practices in the areas of Communication, Technological Innovation, and Environmental Protection. In 2021, it awarded REN's "Environmental Impact Studies: Virtual Visit" project in the "Communication & Engagement" category. This year, the other awardees were EirGrid in the "Communication & Engagement" category and Red Eléctrica de España, in partnership with the Spanish National Scientific Research Centre, in the "Environmental Protection" category.

RGI is an entity focused on the collaboration between Non-Governmental Organisations and Energy Transmission System Operators across Europe, and it promotes the development of environmentally transparent and sustainable grids in line with the Paris Agreement.
