REN joins the Portuguese Diversity Charter

 

REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais joined the Portuguese Diversity Charter, an initiative of the European Commission created to encourage employers to implement and develop internal policies and practices to promote diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities at work. In Portugal, the Diversity Charter is managed by the Portuguese Association for Diversity and Inclusion (APPDI - Associação Portuguesa para a Diversidade e Inclusão).

The decision was made within the scope of REN's Strategic Plan for Gender Equality for 2019-2023, which foresaw, by the end of 2022, the materialisation of six initiatives, of which this was the only one not yet implemented. REN recently supported the Girl MOVE Academy project, which was awarded the 2021 UNESCO Prize, joined the "Women Engineers for a Day" project, which was coordinated by the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, and female employees enrolled in the Professional Women Network Lisbon. Integration in the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index and participation in the UN Target Gender Equality Program were the other two objectives, already achieved.

Over the years, REN has been a pioneer as regards Gender Equality in the Portuguese market, promoting policies and practices that ensure equal opportunities, equal rights and freedoms, and recognising and valuing the role of women and men in society and in REN's organisational success.  In 2021, REN publicly announced the strategic goal of having more than a third of women occupying management positions by 2030.

In 2014, REN publicly assumed its commitment to the issue of gender equality by joining the Forum Organisations for Equality (iGen), and in 2015, it subscribed to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), created by the United Nations, having defined Gender Equality as one of the company's priority topics.  Since then, it has been associated with many initiatives and projects, such as its participation in the Target Gender Equality Programme (United Nations Global Compact) and its joining of WEPs (Women's Empowerment Principles).

The principle of the Diversity Charter is Diversity, understood as the recognition, respect, and valuing of difference(s) among people, including in particular differences related to sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, belief, territory of origin, culture, language, nationality, place of birth, ancestry, age, political, ideological, or social orientation, marital status, family situation, economic situation, health status, disability, personal style, and education.
