REN joins up with the Zero Waste Movement

REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais has joined the Dariacordar Association's Zero Waste Movement (MZD - Movimento Zero Desperdício) in an attempt to pool forces to bring an end to food waste and to help those in need.

Through this partnership, REN will donate the surplus food from its canteens and events to the movement, contributing to their more efficient use. The surplus food is now being collected by a number of charities, guaranteeing that it will be used for the benefit of those people and households that need it. All food safety and hygiene standards will be met and guaranteed by MZD.

According to Rui Cartaxo, with this partnership "REN seeks to contribute towards the social cohesion and environmental sustainability of Portuguese society."

According to data from MZD, one-third of all food produced in the world ends up being thrown away. That is enough to feed three billion people. Each day in Portugal about 50,000 meals end up being thrown away. To date the movement has served 700,000 meals to about 360,000 hungry people in our country.
