REN volunteers clean up Mafra National Reserve

Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) has organised a volunteers’ initiative on Friday 12 July, which comprises cleaning up the scrubland at the Tapada Nacional de Mafra (Mafra National Reserve). The goal of this initiative is to help prevent fire and conserve nature and the forest.

Under the supervision of the Stewards of the Mafra National Reserve, this voluntary action intends to clean the forest debris resulting from fallen trees and to eliminate competing vegetation. This will allow the natural regeneration of the native species and aid the efforts to conserve them.

The initiative is part of the REN voluntary programme (Share) and is carried out jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning and the Nature and Forest Conservation Institute.

Rui Cartaxo, CEO of REN, explains that “it is another example of REN’s commitment towards sustainable development, promoting the involvement of all the interested parties. Voluntary work is the epitome of teamwork, and the way our employees have responded in this first action proves that this spirit of getting involved and helping one another is part of the internal culture of REN.”

As part of the fire prevention efforts, REN is also an active participant of the Companies Against Fires (Movimento ECO), a programme that aims to boost the prevention of forest fires and raise public awareness of risky behaviours. The ECO Movement is a nationwide civic movement in which a number of companies operating in Portugal are involved.
