DFOS - Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing for detecting collisions on high-voltage power lines

Challenge

Detect, accurately and in real time, bird collisions with extra-high voltage (EHV) power lines, contributing to environmental impact mitigation and increased safety.

Goals

Develop a bird collision detection system for EHV lines, using distributed sensing in the optical fibers integrated into the ground wires.

Benefits

  • Optimizes the system management process through the integration of information into SCADA, enabling quicker identification of disturbances.
  • Allows rapid mapping, in time and space, of bird collisions with high-voltage power lines, enabling the study of the phenomenon and mitigating measures.
  • Reduces monitoring costs currently carried out through seasonal campaigns by hired biologists.
