REN, in partnership with AguiarFloresta and the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, has implemented an innovative fuel management project using silvopastoralism at the Vila Pouca de Aguiar substation.
The initiative utilises an ‘Animal Forest Brigade’ comprising around 40 Maronesa cows, which manage the vegetation across an area of 6.5 hectares, helping to reduce the risk of rural fires and promoting sustainable land management.
With scientific monitoring by the IPB, the project assesses the environmental impacts and effectiveness of this nature-based solution, reinforcing REN’s commitment to structural fire prevention, the empowerment of local communities and the promotion of models with the potential to be replicated at other infrastructure sites.
