January was the month with the highest electricity consumption ever

Electricity consumption totalled 5.0 TWh in January, making it the highest monthly figure ever recorded in the Portuguese national system. Compared to the same month last year, consumption grew by 2.1%, which drops to 1.6% when correcting for the effects of temperature and number of working days.

Weather conditions were favourable for both hydroelectric and wind production, recording capability indices of 1.22 (historical average of 1) and 1.27, respectively. For photovoltaics, the corresponding index was 0.81, but still with a year-on-year variation of 38%, given the consistent increase in installed capacity. In total, renewable generation supplied 76% of consumption, with wind contributing 35%, hydropower 30%, photovoltaics 6%, and biomass 5%. Through natural gas power stations, non-renewable generation supplied 14% of consumption, while the remaining 10% was supplied by imported energy.

In the natural gas market, consumption was virtually in line year-on-year, with a slight drop of 0.5%, resulting from 10% growth in the electricity production segment, which nearly offset the 4.3% contraction in the conventional segment, which covers all other consumers.

The Portuguese national system continues to be supplied almost entirely from the Sines LNG terminal, with around 70% of the gas coming from Nigeria and the rest from the USA.
