Biomethane used in the transport sector with a Guarantee of Origin for the first time in Portugal

REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional S.A., in its capacity as a Guarantees of Origin Issuing Entity (EEGO), has registered the first certification of Guarantees of Origin (GO) for biomethane intended for the transport sector. With this operation, the company G3 | Go Green Gas has become a pioneer in Portugal in certifying the renewable origin of biomethane in the transport sector.

According to Isabel Fernandes, Director of Energy Services at REN, “this operation confirms the maturity and robustness of the national platform as a benchmark instrument for certifying the renewable origin of gases in Portugal, demonstrating its ability to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving market. It also demonstrates, in practice, the interconnection of the Portuguese system with its European counterparts”.

For his part, Joaquim Marques, CFO & Head of Business Operations at G3 | Go Green Gas, stated: “This certification is a concrete step towards accelerating the energy transition and the decarbonisation of road transport, and represents the strengthening of a long-standing commitment to mobility based on renewable gases, now carried out within the national system, in line with the practice that G3 had already been ensuring.” ”

GOs are electronic certificates that prove to the end consumer that a given quantity of energy has been produced from a specific source and using a specific technology. In the case of renewable energy, the issuance of these guarantees allows the origin of the energy to be certified, enabling suppliers and end consumers to demonstrate their consumption of renewable energy, particularly in the context of their sustainability strategies and respective reporting obligations.

G3 | Go Green Gas is a Portuguese company specialising in gas-powered mobility solutions for heavy passenger and freight transport fleets. In 2023, it became the first company to market biomethane in Portugal, and has since placed certification of the gas’s renewable origin at the heart of its value proposition. It will now carry out this certification on the EEGO platform.

EEGO is responsible for the implementation and management of the system for the electronic issuance, transfer and certification of these certificates in mainland Portugal. In June 2024, the platform began expanding its activities into the gas sector and, in November of the same year, upon joining the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) and the European Energy Certificate System (EECS), it also began to cover international operations, enabling the circulation and mutual recognition of these certificates amongst member countries.
