Grid-connected solar power doubled in 2024

The Portuguese National Transmission Network connected 776 MW of photovoltaic installations to the grid in 2024, doubling to 1,555 MW of installed capacity, when compared to the 779 MW operational at the end of 2023.

Adding the 476 MW connected last year to the Portuguese National Distribution Network (RND), the total installed capacity rises to 3,872 MW (excluding Self-Consumption Production Units that do not sell surplus to the Public Grid). In 2024, solar power generation reached 4,899 GWh, representing approximately 10% of total consumption in the public grid (51.4 TWh), a 37% increase compared to 2023. This represents the highest share ever in national electricity consumption.

It's worth noting that, by 5 September, 2024's accumulated solar production matched the total solar energy generated throughout the entire year of 2023 in Portugal. In the first nine months of 2024, 3.99 TWh were generated (combining energy injected into both the Portuguese National Transmission Network and the Portuguese National Distribution Network), exceeding the 3.6 TWh produced throughout the entire year of 2023, making 2024 a record-breaking year for solar generation in Portugal by September.

These records confirm that Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive integration of domestic renewable sources, while upholding the fundamental objectives of supply security and service quality in the National Electricity System.
