Renewable energy generation sets new record

Renewable energy generation reached a new historic high in Portugal. On 27 January, at 7:15 p.m., it reached 10,845 MW, at a time when the Portuguese electricity system was exporting around 2,890 MW. The previous maximum was on 8 March 2024, at 8:00 p.m., with an output of 10,434 MW.

As of 27 January, 72% of the Portuguese electricity consumption was supplied by renewable energy, in line with 2024's value (around 71%). In the first 27 days of this year, 34% of electricity consumption was supplied by wind power, 28% by hydroelectric power, 5% by solar power, and 5% by biomass. Generation from natural gas accounted for 14% of consumption, and the import balance was also 14%.

These records confirm that Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive integration of endogenous renewable sources, while maintaining the primary goals of security of supply and quality of service in the Portuguese National Electricity System.
