Portugal produced solar energy up to 5 September equivalent to the total produced in the whole of 2023

Portugal reached a new record in solar energy production. The solar energy produced up to 5 September equalled the total energy produced throughout 2023. In the first nine months of 2024, 3.99 TWh were generated, surpassing the 3.6 TWh produced between 1 January and 31 December 2023, making 2024 a record year for solar production in Portugal as early as September.

The National Electric System also registered a new record, with a peak solar production of 2640 MW on 14 August at 1:15 pm, well above the 2023 maximum of 1822 MW, recorded on 23 September at 12:00 pm.

Between 1 January and 30 September this year, renewables supplied 73% of national consumption, with 10% coming from solar production, demonstrating that Portugal has maintained a sustainable trajectory in the progressive incorporation of endogenous renewable sources while keeping its primary objectives of supply security and service quality for the National Electric System.
