REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais has completed the construction of a new 220kV/30kV substation to supply Siderurgia Nacional, in Maia. This investment of around 10 million euros increases the quality of the power supply to one of the largest energy consumers of Portuguese industry.
REN's project continues the strategic revamping of the national grid in the Greater Porto region and permits the removal of the last 150 kV equipment and power lines, providing a significant improvement to the region's spatial planning.
The new substation also provides Siderurgia Nacional, in Maia with a new, modern and more flexible power supply facility that allows it to increase industrial production, if required.
João Conceição, Executive Director of REN, states that this project, 'is part of the strategy to strengthen the reliability of the national grid in the Greater Porto region, increasing the region's transmission capability and power supply security.'
