REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais and the Portuguese Government, through the State Department of Energy, signed an agreement for the expansion of the Portuguese Pilot Zone (PZ) for the production of wave power in Viana do Castelo.
With the addendum to the agreement now signed, REN will be responsible for the construction of an underwater cable connecting to the Public Service Electrical Network, including its terminal infrastructure, as well as for the right and obligations associated with its installation, operation, maintenance and exploitation.
The implementation of the infrastructure to be carried out by REN will be funded under the NER300 Community programme, which seeks to support the implementation of projects showcasing innovative technologies using renewable energies and the capture and storage of CO2 in environmentally safe conditions.
The pilot zone encompasses an area of approximately 320 km² and is located near S. Pedro de Moel, between Figueira da Foz and Nazaré, with this addendum to the agreement adding a new area near Viana do Castelo.
The primary goal of the Portuguese Pilot Zone is to become an open space, on the Atlantic coast, dedicated to the development of marine energies, with a special emphasis on wave power.
