Following the heatwave that has affected Portugal over the last few days, the National Electricity System has recorded new all-time highs for electricity consumption during the summer months, both in terms of daily consumption and peak demand.
On 2 July, daily consumption reached 165.6 GWh, a figure that was surpassed again the following day, 3 July, when it reached 171.1 GWh. The previous record for summer months was 163.4 GWh, recorded on 13 July 2022.
Meanwhile, the summer peak demand set a new record at 8.00 pm on 2 July, when instantaneous electricity demand reached 8,493 MW, surpassing the previous summer peak of 7,918 MW, recorded on 30 June 2025.
These figures, however, are lower than the winter peaks, which are historically higher, with the record for daily consumption standing at 197.1 GWh and the peak consumption at 10,261 MW. The consumption figures now recorded show a trend towards convergence between the maximum summer and winter consumption levels.
