REN and EPIS - Empresários pela Inclusão Social (Entrepreneurs for Social Inclusion) organized a cleaning action at Tapada de Mafra - National Hunting Grounds again this year.
In a 10-hectare area, around 800 volunteers, including REN's employees and their families, EPIS's students and family members, and volunteers from other companies associated with EPIS, joined by this initiative setting a new record of volunteers cleaning Tapada de Mafra.
Held for the fifth consecutive year, this initiative is coordinated and supported by the technicians of Tapada de Mafra, who also take the opportunity to raise the volunteers' awareness concerning the importance of preventing the risk of fire and the need to preserve biodiversity. In the past four years, the volunteers who participated in REN's forest cleaning events have already contributed to cleaning an area equivalent to 30 hectares.
The work done by the volunteers consists of cleaning the forest debris resulting from fallen trees, thinning vegetation competing with native plant species and repairing fences and protections. This initiative enables reconciling REN's volunteer programme (Share) with one of the axes of the company's sustainability strategy: the preservation of the environment and the conservation of biodiversity.
The participation of EPIS's students gives these young people a different experience, while simultaneously raising their awareness towards the importance of environmental protection. REN an EPIS's member since 2008, within the scope of actions taken to combat school drop-out rates, promoting regular school trips to the company's facilities for young people between the ages of 14 and 16.
