REN and GPA create award for forest and biodiversity protection

REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) and the Green Project Awards (GPA) launch the GPA - REN Biodiversity and Forests Award to promote the innovation and development of best practices in forest and biodiversity protection.

This award stems from the work developed by REN in the protection of the Portuguese forest and within the scope of its sustainability strategy, in which the company is committed to being an active agent in environmental protection, implementing reforestation policies, fostering environmental education, defending the rational use of natural resources and the prevention of pollution, supporting the development of renewable energies and performing an active role in the prevention of climate changes.

Integrated in the category Agriculture and Forestry of the 11th edition GPA, all of the submitted projects in this category are eligible for the GPA - REN Biodiversity and Forests Award, as long as the following requirements are met:

- projects that promote the control of invading woody species by using innovative resources;

- projects aiming to change the use of the soil and forest to agriculture, seeking to make the land more resilient to rural fires;

- innovative projects promoting value creation in the areas allocated to the defence of the forest against fires.

Applications for the GPA - REN Biodiversity and Forests Award are open until 31 May. Applications should be carried out via the following link: http://candidaturas.gpa.pt/pt.

The GPA, an initiative supported by REN since 2014, is a multi-sector platform devoted to the acknowledgment of good management practices for sustainable development. It seeks to mobilize society towards sustainable development and has been cementing its reference role in the field of sustainability in Portugal, creating around it a network of partnerships promoting cooperation among the several sectors of society.
