Guess Watt? Planning and building energy networks

REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais has launched Guess Watt, a game whose aim is to plan and build grids and ensure no one is left without power. The game simulates REN’s role in these two areas and asks players to connect communities to energy sources in a strategic and sustainable manner, whilst responding to dynamic events that challenge the grid, such as storms or accidents.

“Guess Watt allows participants to experience the various stages of the grid development process and understand how sustainability must be an integral part of all strategic decisions,” explains Margarida Ferreirinha, REN’s Director of Sustainability and Communication. “ “In creating this game, aimed particularly at young people, we wanted to give players an insight into the reality of our operations and the various steps involved in planning and building our grids. Relations with stakeholders, right-of-way issues and environmental concerns are just some of the elements of a complex system, involving decisions and choices that must be made before electricity reaches people’s homes, and this game highlights some of them,” she concludes.

At each level of Guess Watt, players have a pre-set budget that they must stick to in order to get energy from various sources to the communities. But it won’t all be plain sailing: along the way, they’ll have to make choices about where to build, invest in network repairs or deal with fluctuations in energy production that could jeopardise the supply.

Suitable for children aged 4 and over, Guess Watt is available for phones and tablets on the App Store and Google Play, and was created and developed by WYCreative.
